The releng ISO is aproaching a size where it will not fit a CD anymore
The releng ISO keeps getting bigger by the day.
-
archlinux-2021.07.01-x86_64.iso
is 779.3 MiB -
archlinux-2021.08.01-x86_64.iso
is 831.3 MiB
This is mostly because the packages in the rootfs image are getting bigger (more firmware in linux-firmare, linux moving from xz to zstd compressed modules, general bloat accumulation, etc.).
The maximum size of a CD is 900 MiB (the capacity of CDs unlike DVDs & BDs is specified in MiB). And we're gradually approaching this limit.
When the ISO exceeds CD size some ~documentation will need to be adjusted to say "DVD":
-
iso_application
in configs/releng/profiledef.sh. -
Release Info in https://github.com/archlinux/archweb/blob/master/templates/public/download.html.
Alternatively, they could be reworded to not mention the specific disc type at all. E.g., something like:
iso_application="Arch Linux Live/Rescue environment"
- "The image can be burned to an optical disc"
