pam 1.6.0-3 breaks openvpn login

Description: upgraded to pam 1.6.0-3 from pam-1.5.3-3 and it broke password authentication.

sudo: reports wrong password

openvpn: the error in the openvpn-connect log is:

Downgrading fixed both issues
