Endless Replacement Suggestions for ttf-gentium-plus and gentium-plus-font Packages
Description:
When performing system updates with pacman -Syu
, I consistently encounter an issue where the package manager suggests replacing ttf-gentium-plus
with extra/gentium-plus-font
, and vice versa, in the subsequent update cycle. This leads to an endless loop of replacement suggestions without ever reaching a permanent resolution. This behavior persists regardless of which replacement option is chosen, indicating a potential conflict or redundancy in package recognition by the package manager.
Additional info:
-
ttf-gentium-plus
is version 6.200-2 -
gentium-plus-font
is version 6.200-1 - This issue has been observed across multiple update cycles.
- Both packages serve the same purpose, suggesting a possible redundancy.
Steps to reproduce:
- Run
pacman -Syu
to update the system. - Accept the suggestion to replace
ttf-gentium-plus
withextra/gentium-plus-font
(or the other way around). - Complete the update process.
- Run
pacman -Syu
for the next system update. - Observe that the replacement suggestion from step 2 is presented again, but in reverse.
Expected Behavior:
After accepting the replacement of the older package with the newer package during an update cycle, the system should recognize this choice in subsequent updates, not suggesting the reversed replacement again. This would prevent the cyclic redundancy and ensure a smoother update experience.
Actual Behavior:
The system continuously alternates between suggesting the replacement of ttf-gentium-plus
with extra/gentium-plus-font
and vice versa in every update cycle, creating an endless loop of replacement suggestions.
Suggested Resolution:
It may be beneficial to review the package metadata or dependencies to identify the cause of this cyclic replacement suggestion. A potential solution could involve marking one of the packages as obsolete or removing the older package from the repository to recognize them as equivalents, thereby eliminating the endless loop of suggestions.
I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to a resolution that enhances the update process's efficiency and user experience.
